At present there are 9 homes for sale in Bayfront Naples Florida that are on the resale market, three of which are 1 bedroom, 1 bath models with around 850 square feet of living area.  Each of these units comes with 1 reserved garage space, with the lowest list price for one of these homes being $299,000.  Each of the other 1 bedroom homes carry an asking price that is $90,000 more.  The lone 2 bedroom, 2 bath unit that is on the market has more than 1,300 square feet, and is being offered partially furnished for $560,000.

Bundled Golf Communities Naples Florida

It can be fun to feel like you are getting something for nothing, even if in reality you are not.  The homes in bundled golf communities in Naples Florida can make it seem as though you are doing just that, with a golf membership to the club coming with home ownership.

Due to the magnitude of the number of such developments in Collier County, the discussion here will concentrate on Southeast Naples (a previous posting covered the North Naples area).  It should be remembered that while there is no actual “initiation fee” that is being charged, there will be a “transfer fee” to cover the cost of “paper work” for maintaining records, printing of materials, etc.  As with any club there will be dues which will need to be paid, mostly on an annual basis, as well as homeowners association fees for the community.

At present, there are 122 properties in bundled golf communities in Naples Florida that are for sale in the southeastern portion of the county.  They are contained in 9 separate communities:

Glades Country Club

Probably the most unusual of these communities is Glades, as it is the only one with 2 separate golf courses.  The Pines course has a bit over 5,400 yards at the longest, with a par of 70, a course rating of 67.3 and a 119 slope.  The other is an 18 hole executive layout with a par of 55 named Palmetto.  Riding or walking either course is allowed at all times.  Both of the courses  were designed by Robert Cupp, who is also responsible for the courses at the La Playa Beach & Golf Resort, and the Estuary at Grey Oaks.

The Glades Golf & Country Club prides itself on having one of the finest professional staffs in the area, especially in the field of club repair.  They can also design and build a complete custom set of clubs to best match and improve your game.  The services of their Golf Learning Center include a “computerized swing analysis, lie/loft analysis, putter fitting” plus a new launch monitor system.  You do not have to be a member of the club to avail yourself of these services, and any golfer is encouraged to stop by and take advantage of their expertise.

Situated between Tamiami Trail East (US 41) and Davis Boulevard, Glades Golf & Country Club is roughly 3 miles from the shops and restaurants of 5th Avenue South, and 4 miles from the beaches of the Gulf of Mexico.

The club’s “19th Hole” grill room, which provides views of the courses, serves lunches daily and dinner a couple of nights each week.  The community also has 9 separate swimming pools, 9 tennis courts 4 of which are clay, as well as one of the “largest and most active bocce leagues” in the area.

Prices for condos and villas in Glades Country Club range from $100,000 to $350,000.

Royal Wood Country Club

A little to the east of Glades Golf & Country Club is the community of Royal Wood and the Royal Wood Country Club.  The design of the club’s course is the work of Dr. Michael Hurdzan, the artist who designed 2 of the most challenging and exclusive layouts in the area, Calusa Pines and Naples National Golf Club.  The Royal Wood course, which opened in 1989, encompasses nearly 170 acres, of which 34 acres are lakes, and stretches to over 6,000 yards with a 70 par with 4 sets of tees.  They offer 2 separate practice areas, and walking the course is permitted after 4:00 P.M.

The Royal Wood development consists of 6 individual neighborhoods of condominiums, with most units having a view of the golf course, plus nearly 150 single family homes.  additional community amenities include 7 heated swimming pools and spas, 14 tennis courts (2 of which are lit and available for night play) and 5 bocce courts.

The 2 homes for sale in Royal Wood are both condos, and are typical units for the community with around 1,100 to 1,200 square feet and list prices in the mid $100,000’s.  Asking and selling  prices for single family residences run between $250,000 and $300,000, with most having 3 bedrooms, 2 baths and around 1,500 to 1,800 square feet under air.

Naples Heritage

Heading north and then a little east of Royal Wood is Naples Heritage, a 550 acre development which is located on the south side of Davis Boulevard.  The golf course of the Naples Heritage Golf & Country Club is the design of Gordon Lewis, whose other area layouts include The Strand, Glen Eagle and Cypress Woods.  This course measures over 6,600 yards, with a par of 72, course rating of 71.6 and slope of 127.  It opened for play in 1997 and was completely renovated 8 years later.  There are now 7 sets of tees, and the greens are “Champions” grass, one of the new “microturf” varieties of Bermuda grass.  This turf is supposed to have less grain, therefore making for a smoother putting surface and a truer line.  Walking is permitted after 4:00 P.M., while golfers are not allowed to use their own golf carts at any time.

The 15,000 square foot clubhouse of the Naples Heritage Golf & Country Club was remodeled in 2007.  Dining options at the club include the main dining room, grill room and an outdoor patio, all of which overlook either the 9th or 18th hole of the course.  The club also offers a state-of-the-art fitness center, community pool, tennis courts and bocce courts.

Condominiums represent 13 of the 18 homes for sale in Naples Heritage, with two distinct sizes.  The units with around 1,200 square feet of living area are listed in the mid to upper $100,000’s, while those that tend to be 200 square feet larger are in the low to mid $200,000’s.  There are 3 villas on the market. with the lowest list price being around $375,000 for over 1,700 square feet, while the highest price is roughly $65,000 more for about an additional 500 square feet.  The asking price for each of the two single family homes for sale is just under $700,000.

Cedar Hammock

Go a little further northeast on Davis Boulevard and you will find Cedar Hammock, a community that has dedicated more than half its total acreage to lakes, preserves and wetlands.  The partnership of Gordon Lewis and Jed Azinger designed this par 72 course with close to 6,700 yards from the “Black” tees (although it can be reduced to around 4,200 yards from the “Green” tees).  This “environmentally friendly” layout has nine sets of tees, with water coming into play on all 18 holes.  One of the top priorities of the professionally staffed pro shop is improving the play of their members by offering private, group or customized lessons, as well as holding regularly scheduled clinics for both men and women.

Other extras of Cedar Hammock include 4 well maintained, lighted Har-Tru tennis courts, 4 heated community pools, aerobics room and a well equipped fitness facility.  They hold year round “complimentary” fitness classes with a professional instructor, and “seasonal” yoga and “water aerobics” classes.

The 5 condos for sale in Cedar Hammock range in size from 1,200 to 1,400 square feet and in price from around $170,000 to just over $260,000.  The 2 attached villas on the market each has close to 1,900 square feet of living area, plus a pool, spa and 2 car garage.  They are priced in the $400,000 range.  The asking price of the one single family home on the market is a bit under $800,000, for a 4 bed, 3 bath, pool home with almost 3,000 square feet.

Cedar Hammock has a second entrance which is off Collier Boulevard (Hwy. 951), and directly across the road from there is the community of Forest Glen.  This gated development of roughly 630 acres which was “virtually carved out of pine forest and hunting preserve,” has nearly 800 residences including condos, villas, single family and estate homes, all living in harmony with nature.

Forest Glen Golf and Country Club

The Forest Glen Golf & Country Club serves as the focal point of the community.  The club’s golf course was originally designed by Gordon Lewis, with a complete reshaping done by the team of Arthur Hills and Steve Forrest in 2008.  This par 72 layout of more than 6,800 yards consists entirely of Sea Isle Supreme Paspalum Grass from tee through green.  This grass, which has a unique dark green color that is “pleasing to the eye”, was chosen because of its limited need for water or pesticides.  It is also quite dense, making the golf ball sit up higher for crisper shots and truer roll.  Other features of the Hills/Forrest redesign include wider, fairer fairways, elimination or reduction of the more severe penalties, more “playability” around the greens, and changes to the “size and character” of the greens.  One item of note, the Golf Channel sponsored online booking program, GolfNow, ranked Forest Glen as the #1 course in the country in 2013, with reviews that averaged 4.95 stars (out of a possible 5.00).

Forest Glen also prides itself for having the reputation as having one of the finest restaurants in the area, going from “simple tastes to a continental gourmet experience”.  There are 4 lighted tennis courts, each having windscreens, swimming pools, fitness center and a paved biking/jogging/walking path through the development.  Classes for yoga, water aerobics, body sculpting and pilates are offered on a scheduled basis.

Presently there are 14 condos for sale in Forest Glen, with 12 of them in the 1,300 to 1,400 square foot range, and list prices around $200,000.  There are 2 larger units with roughly 2,000 square feet that are priced in the mid $300,000’s.  The lone single family residence on the market does not have a pool, but does have almost 1,900 square feet of living space with 2 bedrooms and den with an asking price of $385,000.

Naples Lakes Country Club

Further south on Collier Boulevard is the Naples Lakes Country Club, a community of nearly 500 acres that was established 16 years ago.  The centerpiece of the development is the Arnold Palmer designed 18 hole golf course which is the only one in the area that has been recognized as an “Arnold Palmer Signature Golf Course.”  This par 72 layout which can measure up to 6,800 yards features narrow fairways and strategic bunkering.  The six sets of tees can make the course challenging, yet fun for the novice or the seasoned pro.  An additional accolade earned by the course is that Audubon International has designated it a “Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary.”

The clubhouse at Naples Lakes Country Club was completed in 2001 and then was re-opened 12 years later after an extensive remodeling and expansion.  The 700+ members can pick from dining choices which include the main dining room, Grille Room and 2 private dining rooms.  A fitness facility with “top-of-the-line Cybex exercise and strength-building equipment”, a business center with internet access, bike/jog path, 5 Har-Tru clay tennis courts with 2 teaching professionals and a Junior Olympic size pool are a few of the extras available at the club.  As a reference point, Naples Lakes Country Club is approximately 10 miles from the beaches of the Gulf of Mexico.

The ten condos on the market today in Naples Lakes Country Club, which are part of the bundled golf communities in Naples Florida, range in size from 1,400 square feet up to almost 2,200 square feet, each having 2 baths.  Prices for these units start in the upper $100,000’s, and go all the way up to just over $300,000.  The 4 single family homes for sale in the development are all single story and have at least 4 bedrooms and 3 baths plus a swimming pool and attached garage.  Asking prices for these residences run between $800,000 and $850,000.

Glen Eagle

Glen Eagle is on Davis Blvd. within just a few minutes to 5th Avenue and the Naples beaches.  This large development is unique in that not all of the properties are required to have the bundled golf membership.  This membership is either deeded when you purchase a particular property or not.  A very interesting option for those who wish to live in the beauty of a golf course community, take part in all of the social activities but without the golf.

The course at the Glen Eagle Golf and Country Club, which was opened in 1991 is another design of Gordon Lewis.  This player friendly layout can measure close to 5,600 yards at its longest, with a par of 70, rating of 66.9 and a slope of 115.

There are currently 17 properties available in Glen Eagle with 9 having full bundled golf membership and 8 having a social membership.  Those with a social membership may golf from May through October unlimited and after October 1 for a limited number of times with a member.

Prices range from $149,900 for a 1,330 sq. ft. 2 bedroom 2 bath condo to $425,000 for a 1,809 sq. ft. single family 3 bedroom 2 bath home.

Treviso Bay

Treviso Bay is the newest of the bundled golf communities (approximately 3 years old) on the south side of Naples.  Located on US 41 half way between 5th Avenue and Collier Blvd. (the road to Marco Island).

The development is the home of the TPC Treviso Bay golf course, one of the TPC Network of clubs, sponsored by the PGA of America.  This par 72 layout stretches out to nearly 7,400 yards, with a 155 slope and a 76.2 rating.  It was designed by Arthur Hills, with input from PGA Professional Hal Sutton.

There are currently 23 properties on the market in Treviso Bay ranging in price from a 2 bedroom 2 bath condo with just under 1,200 sq. ft. for $239,900 all the way up to a 5 bedroom plus a den, 6.5 bath estate home that is listed for $2.250.

Countryside

Countryside is located right down the street from Glen Eagle on Davis Blvd.  There are currently 12 properties on the market ranging in price from $112,000 for a 2 bedroom 2 bath condo with over 1,000 sq. ft. of living space to a 1,821 sq. ft. golf course home with 2 bedrooms plus a den and 2 baths that is listed for $399,900.

The same architect that was responsible for TPC Treviso Bay, Arthur Hills, is the one who created this much shorter  layout.  This par 70 course  is roughly 5,500 yards long, with well established scenery.

Olde Naples Naples Florida

When the history of the southwest portion of the state is mentioned, it does not get any more basic than Olde Naples Naples Florida.  Geographically it is a roughly two mile stretch along the Gulf of Mexico starting at the southern boundary of The Naples Beach Hotel & Golf Club and continuing south to 14th Avenue South,  Aqualane Shores and Port Royal.  On the east side there is the Gordon River, Naples Bay and Royal Harbor.  While the total area may not be that large, there are many different and distinct neighborhoods providing a true feel for what makes the city such a great place to live.  One very unique feature of the area is that every east/west avenue ends in access to the beach, with most having some parking available, and that the complete span of the beach area along the Gulf in Olde Naples is public beach.

One such section of Olde Naples Naples Florida would be Ridge Lake on the northern edge of the community.  This is a neighborhood of less than 150 single family homes, most of which are situated around 2 small inland lakes.  The age of the homes in this district, as is the case with most of Olde Naples, varies from early Florida to brand new construction.  At present there are 10 homes for sale in Ridge Lake, with list prices starting at around $1.0 million.  This is a 2 bedroom, 2 bath ranch style residence that was built in 1957.  Asking prices top out at $4.45 million for a 3 year old 2 story manor with more than 4,600 square feet of living area including 6 bedrooms and 4.5 baths, plus pool, spa and 2 car garage.

Another of these small communities that is very similar to 5th Avenue South is 3rd Street South, an area of about 6 square blocks running north to south from Broad Avenue to 14th Avenue South and the border to Aqualane Shores.  The quality and diversity of the shops, galleries and restaurants in this area are on a par with any neighborhood in the country, and as with its cousin ½ mile to the north, there is ample free parking available.

Located just a couple of blocks from the fun and excitement of 3rd Street South is Palm Cottage.  Built in 1895, it is the oldest house in Naples and it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1982.  This 2 story structure was built for Walter N. Haldeman, a newspaper magnate from Louisville, Kentucky.  It is constructed of a type of “hand-made concrete consisting of sand, shells and water”.  The Naples Historical Society owns Palm Cottage and operates it as a museum, with guided tours to show and share insights to the “hand-crafted charm of Old Naples”.  The house has been decorated to show how it looked in the early 1900’s and to reflect the “authentic charm” of that era.

Right next door to Palm Cottage is its “perfect complement”, Norris Gardens.  The Gardens were originally created by Ed Crayton, the individual who designed the city, however they were funded by the Norris Family (therefore the name).  The idea behind them was to exhibit the different plants as they were “introduced to the city’s landscape through time”.  There are five areas in the Gardens depicting distinct themes:

  • Garden of the Senses
  • Pioneer Garden
  • Palm Collector’s Garden
  • Edible Garden
  • Shade Garden

The “Patron’s Walk” provides a beautiful passageway through all the gardens, with benches along the way to relax and enjoy nature’s scenery.

One block due west on 12th Avenue South is one of the most famous and photographed landmarks in all of Florida, Naples Pier.  This historic site was built in 1888 and was used primarily as an unloading dock for passengers and freight by using train rails that ran the length of the dock.  The building of the structure was necessitated because the ship that was supposed to have been used to bring these travelers and cargo to the city through Gordon’s Pass was unable to get past the existing sandbar at low tide.  This would have required the use of shuttles for the necessary transport.  The erection of the pier alleviated this need during periods of low tide, making scheduling of shipments more convenient and cost effective.  In the early 1900’s there was a United States Post Office located on the Pier until it was done in by fire in 1922.  Other uses for the facility throughout the years has been as a “lookout” station during WW II, and as a “dance hall” on many Saturday nights.

Today the Pier is used for people watching as well as sight seeing, as it is a great place to catch glimpses of pelicans, seabirds, dolphins, stingrays and a wide variety of fish.  Fishing from the pier is another favored pastime, as no state fishing license is required, due to the city purchasing a bulk license for the entire pier.  The pier also provides one of the best places to watch the fabulous sunsets for which the city is famous.

Presently Naples Pier is undergoing its 5th renovation in its 127 year history, although safety has always been the utmost priority with planks being routinely being inspected and replaced.  This immense undertaking which commenced in July, right after the fireworks display on the 4th, is expected to be completed by the end of October or early November.  The timing of the project was selected due to the reduced traffic normally experienced during this period, so as not to have an impact on the higher density tourist “season”, with as little inconvenience to local traffic as possible.  Last year Naples Pier attracted a total of nearly 1.1 million visitors.

One of the major factors of this renovation is the construction of new restrooms, particularly the women’s, where space is more than doubled and a diaper changing station with a separate entrance has been added.  It will also include replacing all the planks, plumbing, railings, lights and  electric circuitry, and using stainless steel whenever possible in order to lessen corrosion.

The deck is one of the more fascinating aspects of this improvement, starting with its composition.  It was decided to use a Brazilian walnut, “IPE”, which should last around twice as long (about 30 years) as the normal composite wood planks.  It is more expensive and a bit more difficult to work with, however it is so dense that it can stand up to the weather and traffic that must be experienced, while having the same “fire rating as concrete and steel”.  Another item of note is that the deck is being constructed in 30 foot sections in Ft. Myers, and then these pieces will be put onto a barge.  This barge will then be pushed by a tug boat down the coast to Naples and the Pier area.  The estimate for the trip is roughly 5 hours from Ft. Myers, and at least two trips will be necessary.  Once on site a large crane will be used to off load and then insert these 30 foot sections in place.

Another note of interest regarding Naples Pier and the beaches of Naples Florida is that all the lighting will be “turtle friendly”, meaning that there will be nothing to distract these creatures from the light shining on the water, with the intent of protecting all natural resources.  Visitors can learn many different aspects of life of a turtle and their nesting habits, as well as information relating to other native wildlife, through a TV monitor situated on the pier.

Olde Naples also has its side on Naples Bay, providing for great views as well boating opportunities for the enthusiast.   There are a number of marinas, along with Crayton Cove, which is home of the Naples City Dock, Naples Yacht Club and the Cove Inn, an intimate waterfront hotel.  Boat charters for sightseeing the fabulous mansions of Port Royal, or for fishing the 10,000 Islands or the Gulf of Mexico are easily available.

Beaches of Naples Florida

Fame!!!  It can come for many reasons and for this area, golf may be one of them, however the beaches of Naples Florida have their own place in the spotlight.

This magnificent 17 mile stretch of white sand on the Gulf of Mexico keeps providing both tourists and locals a most enjoyable experience for recreation and education in one of the finest of climates to be found anywhere.

There are a few fairly unique features to these Collier County amenities such as all the beaches are public, (even though there are some private areas away from the water’s edge), there are no real retail shops (fast food, t-shirt shops, etc.) allowed, daily or weekly rentals of homes are prohibited (excluding hotels), and the only north/south interruption of the beach is the occasional pass to rivers or bays.

There are a few rules that everyone should know regarding the beaches of Naples Florida, starting with keeping them clean of litter, with trash disposal containers located at every beach.  Directly on them, the beaches do not permit “glass containers, the consumption of alcoholic beverages, pets, bicycles, and motorized vehicles.”  Violators could be ticketed by the beach patrol officers of either the city or county.

One other item of caution is that stingrays tend to inhabit the shoreline of the Gulf, especially during the period from May through October (off “Season” for the area).  The possibility of a sting by one of these creatures can usually be avoided by doing the “Stingray Shuffle.”  Once you enter the water, just shuffle your feet slowly through the sand, which will send out vibrations that will warn of your presence, and give the opportunity to use their natural reflexes and get out of your way.  They are beautiful, magnificent to watch and would prefer to scurry away from humans.

Another important inhabitant of this sandy environment is the sea turtle.  The Collier County Environmental Services Department (CCESD) is part of the state’s study of nesting sea turtle population.  Responsible for nearly 24 miles of beach (including Keywaydin, each morning during nesting season  biologists patrol the area looking for signs of nesting.  Each nest is marked with stakes and warning tape and then monitored for eventual hatching.  Later the nest is excavated to determine the number of hatchlings that successfully emerged from the nest.  It should be noted that it is illegal to “harm, harass, or kill any sea turtles, their eggs, or hatchlings,” as well as “import, sell, or transport turtles or their products.”

The first place to start when discussing Naples beaches is actually in Bonita Springs, at least according to the United State Postal Service.  Barefoot Beach, at the very end of Bonita Beach Road, is in Collier County however it has a Lee County ZIP Code.  Starting at the county line, this stretch of sand starts with a small park area with covered picnic tables, plus some available county authorized parking.  It goes southward along the Gulf with multi-million dollar single family homes, as well as condos and villas lining the way for roughly a mile to the Barefoot Beach Preserve County Park.

Established in 1990, the Preserve is one of the last undeveloped barrier islands on this coast, protecting the mainland from coastal water and wind.  Strikingly beautiful by its own nature, there are still 5 distinct habitats within this park:  beach, dunes, coastal strand, maritime hammock  and mangrove forest.  It is well known as a great place to stroll along and look for shells or to lay back, relax, look out and watch the dolphins romp in the Gulf.  Another option while in the preserve is to make use of the Park Rangers, who provide a number of useful and informational services to visitors, such as a guided tour through a nature trail to observe the plants and animal life that live there, or to educate people regarding life style of the Loggerhead Sea Turtle, a very prominent resident in the Preserve.  However it is not just the local residents that sing the praises of Barefoot Beach.  It has just recently been named as the #2 of the list of “America’s Best Beaches” for 2015 by Dr. Stephen Leatherman, also known as “Dr. Beach,” whose ratings are published each year on Memorial Day, and featured in Conde Naste magazine and other media throughout the world.  Some of the criteria used in the rankings include the softness of the sand, color of the water, views, water temperature and safety.

On the other side of this outlet is the Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park, a designated recreational area and one of the most popular beach attractions in the state, which is located on a narrow barrier island separated from the mainland by tidal creeks and mangrove swamps.  This mangrove forest accounts for around 80% of the total area of the park, while proving to be a major nutritional source for the marine life that make their start in these waters.  Mollusks, soft corals, numerous crustaceans, reptiles, small mammals and a variety of fish call these shallow waters home.

Additionally the mangroves act as a buffer to the coast regarding heavy storms, filter their waters to maintain quality, and use their extensive root system to limit and prevent erosion.  They, together with other native vegetation such as sea oats, cabbage palms and sea grapes, provide a most natural habitat for many species of wading and shore birds.  In the winter months, many times manatees use the warm waters here as a refuge.

The known history of the area begins with the Calusa Indians, building villages and their harvesting of the bountiful Gulf and Bay waters.  The first written record of the area was done by Joseph Wiggins in the late 1800’s, who was also the first person to “homestead” here.  He ran a trading post providing goods to indians and early settlers alike, and had the “Pass” named after him.  Eventually the property became to be owned by Dellora A. Norris, who then donated the land to Collier County, hence the name “Delnor”.  The state of Florida bought the property from the County in 1970 in order to open a “state park”.  This major development was eventually completed and officially opened to the public in 1981.

As one might expect being situated so close to Barefoot Beach, the #2 of “America’s Best Beaches,” the beach of Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park earned a ranking of #9 on its own merits.  The park however has a lot more going for it than just the spectacular stretch of sand.

Wiggins Pass serves as a natural outlet to the Gulf for the Cocohatchee River.  From here explorations can go east up the river, use the back bays to go north to Estero Bay or west to the Gulf.  A very convenient boat ramp which empties into Water Turkey Bay and then via the South Channel to the river, is located in the park.  The “concessionaire” for the park offers kayaks, stand up paddleboards and canoes for rent to explore any of the surrounding bay areas.  It should also be noted that they will deliver food, drinks, lounge chairs and umbrellas to any area of the park.

While shelling may be a major attraction for many beach goers (remember to keep in mind that “live” shelling is a real NO-NO), fishing is another big plus for the Park.  The Gulf, Water Turkey Bay and the Cocohatchee River are all prime spots to fish from a boat, providing an opportunity to snag both fresh and saltwater fish.  Fishing is also allowed from the shoreline along Wiggins Pass or wading into Water Turkey Bay.  The only major spots where fishing is prohibited is in the swimming areas of the park, which is within 300 feet of the beach along the Gulf.  Swimming is not permitted in Wiggins Pass itself, due primarily to strong currents and undertows.

Strolling south of Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park along the the Gulf of Mexico beaches, the first thing to been seen away from the water is the 11 story, recently constructed, modern high-rise condominium, Moraya Bay.  As a point of interest, earlier this month a home on the 6th floor that has nearly 4,400 square feet of living area including 3 bedrooms and 3.5 baths, was sold for $6.0 million.  Continuing south along Vanderbilt Beach, there are a number of other condominiums, as well as the La Playa Beach & Golf Resort.  Here is a place where you can get a cool drink or a bite to eat in either their Tiki Bar or Baleen Restaurant.  A little further down is the Vanderbilt Beach County Park, where ample parking is available, as well as rest rooms, showers and easy handicap accessibility to the beach.

Whenever the subject of condominiums is brought up, the high-rise condos in Pelican Bay Naples Florida will sure to be part of the discussion.  The importance starts with the location of the development itself, stretching for roughly 3 miles along the the beautiful beaches of the Gulf of Mexico and the equally impressive mangrove preserve.  It is bound on the north end by Vanderbilt Beach Road, on the south by Pine Ridge Road, with US 41 (Tamiami Trail N) on the east side.

Part of the framework of Pelican Bay are two luxurious resorts, with the Ritz Carlton Beach Resort to the north and the Naples Grande Beach Resort on the south end.  The community also plays hosts to the boutiques and restaurants to be found in the Waterside Shops, as well as the arts and entertainment available at Artis-Naples.  Other notable attractions can be found relatively close:

Pelican Bay was founded on the principles of preservation and conservation in the development of the community, beginning with the purchase of more than 2,300 acres of land from Baron Collier in 1972.  When originally developed the ground was broken and Clam Bay was created (there are now three, Upper Clam Bay, Inner Clam Bay and Outer Clam Bay).

This was a master plan residential community where “residents could enjoy the natural wonders of Florida’s surrounding waterfront lifestyle”.  Then in 1974 it was renamed Pelican Bay.  It was Collier County that designated the mangrove forest as a “natural resource protection area” in 1982.  The master developer, WCI, set aside a number of common areas that would be maintained forever under the guidance of the Pelican Bay Foundation which also serves as the Master Home Owners Association.

Today there are more than 40 acres of parks,recreation areas, restaurants, tennis facilities and community centers that are maintained by the Foundation, using the dues received from property owners.  The Foundation also publishes the Pelican Bay Post, a newsletter that is put out around 20 times per year reporting news of community news and events as well as social and recreational activities.  The Community Center at Pelican Bay is a 25,000 square foot structure that serves as the hub around which the many amenities offered by the development are served.  There is a manned front desk to answer questions, make reservations for meeting rooms or to register residents for classes and activities.  Each year the Center organizes a variety of social and cultural events for the community including dinner dances, movies, art shows and luncheons.  There are numerous programs for bridge players, anywhere from “beginners” to “duplicate”.  The “Art Studio” provides a place to learn, sharpen and create from an individual interest.  From January thru April “Photo Guild” meets on a monthly basis to discuss a particular topic, and then will follow the meeting with a field trip to put into practice what was learned or discussed.  The staff at the Center is also open to new ideas and can assist in arranging a group or club where people of like interests can get together and meet to enhance the enjoyment of that topic or field.

Before ever leaving your condo beach conditions can be checked on your television, by way of the web cameras situated both north and south.

To make it even more unforgetable, food and beverage with an extensive menu can be ordered at the request of a resident and delivered directly to your beach chair by staff.  Even getting to the beach can be a worthwhile adventure by walking the boardwalk from the condominium through the mangroves to the sandy oasis.  Walking is just one option however, with the tram system running the entire way to and from the clubs and condos.  To make it even more environmentally correct the entire tram system is under going a conversion to solar/electric vehicles. (As an added side note, more than 800,000 residents and guests take trips throughout the developments parks, beaches, boardwalks and recreational areas each year.)

Another very noteworthy bonus to the development is the centrally located The Club at Pelican Bay with it’s 27 holes of golf, which possesses the well-deserved reputation as one of the premier clubs in the area.  There are three 9 hole courses which can be played in differing patterns to provide an ever changing experience for the player.  Each of the 9 hole layouts were designed by noted architect Arthur Hills (who is also responsible for Quail West, Colliers Reserve and Triviso Bay in the area) with a par of 36, with around 3,200 to 3,400 yards at the longest.  The Club provides a 40,000 square foot clubhouse with a golf pro shop, numerous dining options, locker rooms for both men and women, plus a croquet court with mallots and balls available at no extra cost.  It should be noted that membership to The Club may be available but is not mandatory.

The northernmost of these buildings is Montenero which is just to the south of Bay Colony.  These high-rises run south with most having entrances from the west side of Pelican Bay Boulevard then ending with St. Topez, which is off Crayton Road and borders the Naples Grande Resort.  Each of these individual communities have their own set of amenities while varying to some degree, such as private pool, spa, meeting rooms, card rooms, garage or covered parking, gated entrance, secure entry way, concierge and entrance to the beach.  Many will have guest suites where an owner can reserve a place to accomodate their guests directly on the premisis.  Some have a billiard room, library, business center, their own fitness facility, tennis court or a lobby that is manned around the clock.  Also, as might be expected, most of the homes on the upper floors have spectacular views of the Gulf of Mexico, the “Clam Bays”, the Mangrove Forest, The Club at Pelican Bay golf course and more.  Some also have units that have views “Gulf to golf”.

That is going to change due to the recent anouncement of a new luxury high-rise, Mystique.  This 22 story building will have 87 units, with pre-sales starting this December when prices will be published.  Construction to commence in 2016.  Beyond the standard amenties, this new addition to Pelican Bay will have a health club with on-call masseuses, a “hunt” room and pools on the “penthouse floors”.
